About
St. Augustine's Priory
St Augustine's Priory is privately owned and was founded
in 1253 by Henry III. It became the home of the Black Canons and
for the next three centuries St Augustine's Priory played a very
importmant role in history by welcoming pilgrims on their journey
from the Cinque Ports of Hythe, New Romney and Rye to Canterbury.
After Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries the priory fell
into disrepair. St Augustines Priory was later used by smugglers
from Romney Marsh who put rumours around that the priory was haunted
by the ghosts of monks - this was done to try and to stop locals
from visiting the ruins. Even to this day, some say that ghostly
monks can be seen in the Priory and gardens. St Augustines Priory
was restored at the beginning of the last century and today, the
Priory consists of the Chapter House, the Grand Hall and the Prior's
lodgings.
