Having arrived at Ware Priory in plenty of time I set up my piano and all the rest of my gear at the front of the function room. It took me about forty minutes to set up so I was well ahead of schedule. I had plenty of time so I had a walk around Ware and returned to the venue about twenty minutes before I was due to start my performance.
It was quite a large room, but the size of the room didn’t really give me any idea of how many people were going to come to this party. As the first guests arrived I started playing the piano and people just kept coming and coming. I couldn’t believe how many people came along to this birthday party. The room was absolutely packed. I was working alongside a DJ and we were alternating sets. The idea was to play background music for the first part of the evening and then change into my Cockney outfit (Bowler hat, waistcoat, neckerchief, watch chain etc.) for a good old Cockney knees up towards the end of the evening.
Eventually the time came for me to go and get changed. There were so many people there that I really had to fight my way through the throng to where I was going to get changed. After I’d changed I started to make my way back to where my piano was set up. By now I was starting to worry about giving out the song sheets as it would be a very difficult task. Luckily Ann who had organised the party sorted all this out for me and got a few more people on to the task. It took quite a while, but the song sheets were all handed out and we started the singalong. I’ve got to say that their enthusiasm was overwelming. Because of the sheer number of people, the volume was quite intense. Eventually we got to the end of the song sheet and it was time for me to pack up and go home.
I know that Joan had a wonderful 90th birthday party and I also know that Sam had a wonderful 50th. I know because they told me so. Many happy returns to them both and I hope that Ann books me again for another get together.
